This Weekend: Italian

Badia Corti Orvieto Classico Abbocato 2009 $9.99
Umbria, Italy
This refreshing white wine comes from the area around the hilltop town of Orvieto in the province of Umbria in the heart of Italy. Wine has been made in Orvieto since Etruscan times. This blend of Trebbiano (Italy's most widely planted white varietal) and Malvasia Blanca shows luscious fruit and a slightly floral quality.  Definitely a wine to pair with some Shrimp and Grits, or the ever-popular White Chicken Chili.

Vallevo Pecorino 2008 $11.99

Abruzzo, Italy
It's not the cheese by the same name, but rather an early-ripening white variety grape that is mainly grown in the Marche, Abruzzo, Umbria and Lazio regions of Italy. Wildflower and pear aromas jump from the glass, and the palate is rich in pear, peach, herb and mineral notes.

Casa Ibidini Nero d'Avola 2008 $12.99
Sicily, Italy
Sicily's most important red varietal, this grape is named after Avola in the far south of Sicily and is often compared to spicy Australian Shiraz. It is a fairly weighty red with dark berry fruit and firm, but well-integrated tannins.  Put this wine up against any rich, cheesy lasagna, or hearty stews and you won't be disappointed.

Paitin Langhe Rosso 2006 $19.99
Piedmont, Italy
This delicious blend of classic Piedmont varietals Nebbiolo and Barbera earned a stellar 92-point score from Wine Advocate, who called it a "fresh, vibrant wine imbued with violets, graphite, menthol, plums, wild cherries and minerals, all of which come together beautifully. The wine offers a combination of ripeness and minerality that is very appealing."

Cellar Selection

Corte Majoli Amarone 2005 $29.99
Veneto, Italy

Because of how Amarone is made, it can be a "pricey" wine, but this Corte Majoli Amarone from the Tezza winery is an outstanding value. Classic ripe cherry, cocoa, coffee and strawberry notes in a style that's not too aggressive and certainly not flabby. This wine won't disappoint.
